A framework paper from the scientific wing of the corpus, developed and refined across several revision cycles. It sets out a model of recall — of how the mind returns to and reconstitutes prior states — and integrates an assessment of the Gateway Process alongside a two-phase account of the default mode network. Of all the work it sits closest to empirical psychology, and it is correspondingly careful about its seam: where it reports established findings it says so, and where it proposes, it marks the proposal as its own. It is the anchor of the Scientific Theory section, the place where the framework's vocabulary is brought into contact with the machinery of memory research.

A note on this revision
The second edition reopened a question the first had closed. This third edition does something harder: it notices a pattern across the closings and reopenings, and follows the pattern to its conclusion.
Here is the pattern. Every time this framework has reached into physics for a mechanism, the mechanism has died — and the intuition underneath it has survived, in a different register, once relocated. The first edition rejected 432 Hz. The second reopened it, found the direct evidence weak and the universal mechanism absent, and relocated the resonance intuition from an audible pitch to the one personal resonance that is actually measurable: the cardiovascular baroreflex at roughly a tenth of a hertz. The claim did not die. It moved to where it was true.
This edition applies that same move to the framework’s remaining borrowed machinery — auditory entrainment, hemispheric synchronization, the whole family of ideas descending from the Monroe Institute’s Hemi-Sync and from the 1983 Army assessment of it — and finds the same result. The mechanism does not survive. The intuition does, once it is moved out of physics and into psychology, where it has instruments, samples, and a literature.
So the third edition states the conclusion the first two were circling: this framework’s real home is psychology, and physics was only ever the metaphor. Resonance, entrainment, synchronization, frequency — these have been doing rhetorical work the evidence never authorized. What actually carries the weight is memory, attention, absorption, and the network dynamics of the self. That is not a retreat. It is the framework finally standing on the ground it was always standing on.
I did not invent this move, and I want to be precise about where I learned it. I made it in On Thinking without naming it: the childhood “fact” that people are left-brained or right-brained is dead — a thousand brains in a scanner found no such person — and yet the part of me that held onto it was not wrong, only pointing at the wrong thing. The halves are not two personalities. They are two ways of paying attention. Kill the false mechanism; keep the intuition; relocate it to where it is real. That essay also gave the formula this framework now adopts as its governing rule: a correspondence held at least by metaphor and at most by measurable correlation, and never quietly promoted from the first to the second.
The rest is the ask, not the answer.
1. Interpretive Frame: Intent, Trace, and the Things That Last
Of all the arts, music is the one we reach for when language runs out. We do not say a sad song describes sadness the way a painting depicts a face; we say it is sad — that it carries the feeling directly, without the detour of representation. Schopenhauer made exactly this claim the center of his philosophy of music: where the other arts copy the world of appearances, music bypasses them and expresses the will itself, the inner movement of life, immediately. Nietzsche, who knew that argument well, put the same conviction more bluntly. One need not adopt either man’s full metaphysics to feel the force of the shared intuition: music reaches something in us that other things do not reach, and it does so in a way that seems to outlast the hearing.
That last part — the outlasting — is what this framework takes seriously. A piece of music can lodge in a life. It can return uninvited, years later, and bring a whole season of a person back with it. If music expresses the movement of an inner life so directly, then perhaps it can also leave that movement behind in us, the way a struck bell goes on sounding after the strike. This is the philosophical seed of everything that follows: not that music is pleasant, but that it is uniquely capable of depositing a felt state that persists.
This connects to a personal cosmological frame the author refers to as jays: that aligned, intentional action leaves coherent ripples through time, and that what endures tends to be what was done with attention and intent. Applied to music, the claim is not the strong (and false) one that sincerity guarantees survival, but the subtler one: music made and received with genuine intent is more likely to remain legible as a signal — to keep carrying its meaning — because depth of attention encodes structure, and structure is what survives being carried across time.
This layer is the framework’s motivation and meaning. It is not, by itself, what gets measured. Holding it in its own lane is deliberate: it lets the philosophy be taken seriously precisely because it is not asked to do the work of evidence.
1.1 The governing rule
Because this edition is largely an exercise in register discipline, the rule is stated up front rather than left implicit:
Every correspondence in this framework is held at least by metaphor and at most by measurable correlation. A structural metaphor borrowed from physics or neuroscience is never presented as a literal physical claim, and is never quietly promoted from the first standing to the second. Where a claim crosses from metaphor to correlation, the crossing is announced and the evidence named. Where it cannot cross, it stays a metaphor and says so.
Everything that follows is an application of this rule, including — especially — the places where it forced the author to give something up.
2. Theoretical Background: Claims Ranked by Evidence
The approach bundles several distinct claims. Pulling them apart is what makes the whole thing testable, because each carries a different amount of existing support and therefore a different amount of weight in the design.
2.1 The mechanism claim — audio can shape brain state
There is evidence that rhythmic auditory input can entrain neural oscillations — the brain’s electrical rhythms can phase-lock to a beat.1 Researchers have documented entrainment echoes: rhythmic brain responses that persist briefly after the stimulus stops, often described with the image of a swing that keeps moving after it has been pushed.2
Load note — duration is the stretch, not the effect. The documented echoes last on the order of seconds, not hours. Post-stimulus persistence is supported; extending it to hours is a hypothesis, not a fact. §2.6 argues the honest route to hours-long persistence is not sustained ringing in the cortex but memory and re-cueing — a different, better-supported mechanism.
2.2 The individual-difference claim — no universal center
Not everyone reaches the same internal “center,” and no single frequency, mantra, or stimulus should be expected to work identically across people. This is the framework’s strongest and most original commitment, and it runs against the way fixed-frequency audio products are marketed. Making individualization central is also a methodological hedge: the field’s clearest failures cluster precisely around one-size-fits-all stimuli.
This edition leans harder still on this claim, because it is where the real science in this territory actually lives — and because the moderator it identifies (trait absorption) turns out to be better supported than any of the stimuli the framework once hoped would do the work.
2.3 The persistence claim — the heart of it
A positive affective state evoked by personally meaningful music can be made more accessible after the session. This does not require an exotic mechanism. It can ride on well-documented processes: mood induction, emotional-memory consolidation, conditioning, and music’s documented power to evoke vivid, disproportionately positive autobiographical memory.3
2.4 The intent claim — legibility, not magic
Music that was meant — produced and chosen with care, attended to deliberately — is hypothesized to do something a randomly assigned stimulus does not. This is treated in the legibility-of-intent sense above: both the interpretive reason the work matters and a secondary, harder-to-isolate empirical hypothesis. It is not claimed as an established causal law.
2.5 The 432 Hz question, as the second edition left it
The second edition reopened this and the finding stands, so it is summarized rather than re-argued. The direct 432-vs-440 literature is real but weak: small samples, a stimulus that is nearly impossible to blind from listeners who know the mythology, and a comparison confounded with the cultural story attached to the number.4 Read charitably it is not nothing; read carefully it is very far from a result. Reopened, not embraced.
The universal mechanism fails outright. The chain from 432 Hz to 8 Hz to the Schumann resonance of the Earth–ionosphere cavity compares an acoustic pitch to an electromagnetic cavity phenomenon, rounds 7.83 to 8 because 8 is a convenient power of two, and asserts a coupling no one has demonstrated.5 The body’s genuine mechanical resonances sit far below the audible range and have nothing to do with which pitch you assign to the note A.
The salvage stands too, and it is the template for this whole edition. The intuition — that individuals have resonant frequencies — is not fringe. It is about a different band. At roughly a tenth of a hertz, slow breathing drives the baroreflex into a genuine resonance that maximizes heart-rate-variability amplitude, and each person’s exact resonance frequency differs within a narrow individual band.6 The thing the 432 story reaches for — a natural frequency, particular to a person, that settles the system — exists. It is a slow rhythm of breath and heartbeat, measurable and already in clinical use. That is what “natural resonance achieved” can honestly mean here.
2.6 The Gateway inheritance — a case study in the refused relocation
The framework should say plainly where its entrainment machinery comes from, because the lineage is not neutral and the reader deserves to see it.
In 1975 Robert Monroe patented audio techniques for driving the two hemispheres toward synchrony. In June 1983 Lt. Col. Wayne McDonnell, writing for the US Army’s Intelligence and Security Command, produced Analysis and Assessment of Gateway Process — an assessment of the Monroe Institute’s program, prepared in the orbit of the remote-viewing effort later known as Stargate. That program ran from roughly 1978 to 1995, cost on the order of twenty million dollars, and was terminated after an external review in which the statistician Jessica Utts argued the effect was real and the psychologist Ray Hyman argued it was not replicable; the agency sided with Hyman, citing a lack of documented intelligence value.7 The document was declassified in 2003 and went viral decades later. Its cultural life has vastly outrun its epistemic standing.
I engage it rather than quarantine it, because it is the most instructive negative example available to this framework — and because a great deal of what I might have written about audio and transcendence, had I not looked, would have been a less honest version of it.
Its sources fail, and they fail in a specific way. McDonnell builds on Itzhak Bentov’s Stalking the Wild Pendulum (1977): the heart and aorta setting up standing waves in the brain ventricles, the body resonating near 7 Hz with the Earth’s electrostatic field, and consciousness expanding through that coupling. None of it has survived peer review; the ventricles do not resonate as described. Note that this is the same chain the second edition already rejected at 432 Hz — the Schumann move, made one register over. On top of it he lays the Pribram–Bohm holographic brain: consciousness as a hologram tuning a holographic universe. Here the distinction matters and I want to be fair. Bohm’s implicate order is serious philosophy of physics. The brain-as-hologram application is the overreach — it never produced testable predictions at the level of neurons, and mainstream neuroscience does not accept it, though its kernel (that memory is distributed rather than strictly localized) is broadly right. The report’s “click out,” absolute time, and faster-than-light material is not contested science. It is pseudoscience, and calling it anything softer would be a courtesy the reader has not asked for.
Its central empirical claim fails too. Hemispheric synchronization is the load-bearing premise of Hemi-Sync and of the Gateway report, and it does not hold at the strength they need. The premise underneath it — that people have a dominant hemisphere, a whole-brain left or right character — was falsified at scale: resting-state imaging of 1,011 individuals, examining every pair of some 7,266 regions, found lateralized networks but no whole-brain “left-brained” or “right-brained” phenotype.8 And the claim that audio drives the hemispheres into synchrony fares little better. A 2023 systematic review of the EEG literature found five studies supporting the brainwave-entrainment hypothesis, eight contradicting it, and one mixed, and concluded that methodological heterogeneity leaves the question unsettled.9 A rigorous single-blind study found binaural beats did not entrain the brain more than control beats.10
One honest positive, stated with its limits. Binaural beats have been shown to increase interhemispheric coherence in the alpha band between the auditory cortices, relative to monaural beats and to rest.11 That is a real finding and I will not bury it. But three limits travel with it, from the same paper: the effect was confined to the alpha band and to the auditory cortices — not a whole-brain phenomenon; it was not accompanied by amplitude changes; and, most damaging for any practical claim, there was no behavioral aftereffect — a validated dichotic listening task showed no improvement afterward. A coherence that leaves no trace in behavior is not yet the thing Gateway promised.
What this leaves. Gateway asked a good question: can structured audio and focused attention produce profound internal states? The experiences it describes are real; people have them. What it got wrong was the answer — and specifically, it refused the relocation. Confronted with a folk dualism (two hemispheres, two natures), it drove deeper into physics to rescue it, and ended in the ionosphere. On Thinking met the same folk dualism and went the other way: killed the personalities, kept the asymmetry, relocated it to two modes of attention, where it is real.12 Same fork. Opposite turn. That contrast is the most useful thing this framework has taken from the document, and it is why the document appears here at all.
The seam, stated once. The Gateway report is what this framework looks like if the governing rule of §1.1 is abandoned. Its authors seem to have felt that profound experiences needed physics in order to be legitimate. They did not. That anxiety is what wrecked the document, and it is the specific failure this edition is written to avoid.
2.7 The two attentions — what the companion essay contributes
On Thinking is a philosophy-of-mind essay, not an evidence base, and it is careful to say so. But it establishes three things this framework needs.
First, the asymmetry is real even though the dominance story is dead: one hemisphere attends narrowly and takes things apart; the other attends widely and holds the whole in context.13 This is the reframing that survives Nielsen’s thousand brains.
Second, integration — not either half — is where selfhood lives. Self-reflection in a healthy brain is left-lateralized, the narrating interpreter; damage the right and the sense of self can come apart at its boundaries. The proposal that self-consciousness depends on the two hemispheres communicating through the corpus callosum rather than on either alone is a live, argued position.14 The essay lays a Jungian reading over that seam — Persona speaking on the left, Self waiting on the right, Ego the lamp in the middle that believes it is doing the seeing — and flags that mapping, in its own notes, as interpretive analogy rather than neuroscience. That flag is exactly the governing rule in action, and this framework inherits both the reading and the flag.
Third, and most usefully, it leaves a door open and says so out loud. Long-term meditators have measurably thicker, better-connected callosal regions.15 Insight and creativity keep turning up alongside the two halves talking to each other; mathematically gifted adolescents turn out to have no “math module” but simply to run the halves together more cooperatively.16 And then the honest sentence: these are correlations, not proofs; no one has yet shown that building the bridge causes the seeing. The essay says it is leaving the words in plain sight so that someone with a lab and a lifetime might run the study.
This framework is where that door gets walked through, or at least knocked on. The relevant researcher’s own caution is worth quoting for its precision: longitudinal studies are required to determine whether the callosal differences are induced by meditation or are an innate prerequisite for taking it up and sticking with it. There is one short longitudinal signal — brief integrative training producing white-matter change in the callosal body and genu in meditation-naïve subjects — but it is a signal, not a settlement.17 Nobody has shown the bridge causes the seeing. That is H9.
2.8 The default-mode fork — and the resolution this edition proposes
Here is a contradiction I did not notice until the two papers were laid side by side, and it goes to the center of both.
On Thinking locates transcendence in the quieting of the default mode network — the network that runs the endless narration of me, hottest in rumination, thinned by meditation and surrender until the boundary between self and world goes soft, which the researchers describe not as breakdown but as reorganization into a wider shape.18
Resonant Recall makes music-evoked autobiographical memory its primary engine. But autobiographical memory is the default mode network’s home turf. Medial prefrontal cortex tracks the autobiographical salience of familiar music; music-evoked nostalgia activates the default mode and reward networks together.19
So one paper wants the network down and the other needs it up. Same network. Opposite directions. Either the framework has a hole in it or the two projects are describing different things.
I think it is neither, and the resolution is the most interesting thing in this edition.
They are phases, not opponents. Consider what actually happens when a song that matters to you does its work. It takes you up through your own history first — the memory arrives, self-relevance floods in, the network of me lights up because the song is about me. And then, at the peak, if the thing lands, something briefly stops: the chill, the moment where you are not narrating anymore, where the self-salience drops out and there is only the music. Awe reduces default-mode activity.20 Ego-dissolution involves its disruption.21 Chills-inducing music has been shown to augment self-transcendence, with trait absorption predicting who gets there.22
So the sequence is: the network up, then the network down — autobiographical engagement, then peak absorption. And here is the hypothesis I actually want to put my name on: what persists is not either state but the transition between them. The song carries you up through yourself and then briefly out of yourself, and the thing that gets encoded — the thing still there tomorrow — is the crossing. That is why the mechanism has to be memory rather than resonance. A crossing is an event. Events consolidate. A frequency does not.
This is H8, and it is falsifiable in a way the framework’s earlier claims were not: time-resolved imaging should show default-mode engagement early and disengagement at the chills peak. If the network stays flat, or moves only one way, the model is wrong.
Weakest assumption, named. The two-phase model assumes that music-induced transcendence maps onto the same network dynamics as meditative and psychedelic ego-dissolution. That assumption is doing real work and may be false. The default-mode literature also contains genuine unresolved contradictions — reduced connectivity in that network appears in ego-dissolution and in unresponsive wakefulness and absence seizures, which are not the same thing at all. A quiet network is not automatically a transcendent one. H8 is a working hypothesis, not a settled account, and this paragraph is here so no reader mistakes it for one.
2.9 Music as a bridge — a hypothesis, and an honest discount
If integration is the target, music is a more defensible vehicle than binaural beats, and it is worth saying why — and then saying why that is not yet a finding.
Music is genuinely bilateral in a way language is not. The right auditory cortex is weighted toward spectral and melodic processing, the left toward temporal and rhythmic — a tradeoff with real causal evidence behind it: degrade the temporal information and speech comprehension suffers while melody survives; degrade the spectral information and melody discrimination suffers while speech survives.23 Music engages distributed bilateral networks, plausibly more than language does.24 And musicians have a larger anterior corpus callosum, especially those trained before about age seven.25
Now the discount, because the case is weaker than that paragraph sounds. The callosal finding is structural, not functional, and cross-sectional — musicians selected themselves into music. The evidence that music training increases interhemispheric functional connectivity is likewise largely cross-sectional and confounded. And “whole-brain synchronization,” the phrase the wellness market reaches for here, is not a neuroscientific construct; it is a marketing one. Music being bilateral does not mean music integrates you.
So: music is a plausible candidate for the integration Gateway sought through beats, and a better one on the evidence. That is a hypothesis. It is not a finding, and this framework does not need it to be one.
Evidence-strength summary (third edition)
3. Core Hypotheses (Stated to Be Falsifiable)
Each hypothesis is phrased so it could, in principle, come out false. That property — not confidence — separates a research framework from a belief system.
H1 (Primary). Personally meaningful, positive-affect music selected by the individual produces a measurable positive mood shift larger and/or more durable than music the individual rates as pleasant but not personally significant.
H2 (Persistence). The elevated affective state remains measurably above baseline for some defined interval after listening ends — interval determined empirically, not assumed.
H3 (Added-layer — retained, and expected to fail). Adding an auditory-entrainment layer to the person’s own music produces a greater or longer-lasting effect than the same music and ritual without it. Given §2.6, I now expect this to come out false, and I am saying so before the data rather than after. It stays in the framework because a clean falsification is worth more than a quiet deletion — the claim is widely marketed and deserves a real test. If H3 fails and H1/H2 hold, the framework loses nothing it needs.
H4 (Individualization). The audio parameters that best support the effect differ across individuals, such that a single fixed frequency underperforms an individually tuned one.
H5 (Depth). Songs tied to formative or autobiographically rich memories yield stronger and more durable effects than songs valued for surface or instrumental reasons.
H6 (Conjunction / moderation). Durable persistence is not produced by any tuning as a main effect. It emerges, if at all, from an interaction: individually matched material × listener alignment × fidelity-as-care. Revised in this edition: “alignment” is anchored primarily to trait absorption, which is the best-supported moderator in this territory, with interoceptive awareness and resting HRV coherence as secondary proxies. Prediction: in low-absorption listeners, parameters do not matter; in high-absorption listeners, an effect appears at an individually variable optimum.
H7 (Outlasting). Positive affect remains measurably above baseline beyond the duration of the stimulus. This persistence is carried by consolidation and re-cueing — predicting sleep-dependence and strengthening with repetition — not by post-offset entrainment, which predicts decay within seconds. The two mechanisms make opposite predictions about time course, so the clock can tell them apart.
H8 (Two-phase — new, and central). Music-anchored persistence involves a sequence rather than a state: default-mode engagement during autobiographical retrieval and encoding (Phase 1), followed by default-mode disengagement at peak absorption / chills (Phase 2). What persists is the transition, not either phase. Predictions: time-resolved imaging shows engagement early and disengagement at the chills peak; persistence at follow-up correlates with the magnitude of the crossing rather than with either phase’s amplitude; and pieces that produce Phase 1 without Phase 2 (nostalgic but not moving) show weaker persistence than pieces that produce both. Falsified if the network stays flat, moves only one direction, or if persistence tracks a single phase.
H9 (Integration / the bridge — new). The study the companion essay left the words for. Personally meaningful music produces greater interhemispheric functional connectivity than matched non-meaningful music. The stronger and more important form: longitudinal change in interhemispheric connectivity precedes and predicts change in self-reported integration and wholeness. Falsified if connectivity does not differ by meaningfulness, or — the load-bearing case — if connectivity change is uncorrelated with subjective integration, which would establish the bridge as correlate rather than cause and close a door that has stood open since 2011.
Why H3 stays in a framework that expects it to fail. It would be easy, and dishonest, to delete the entrainment layer now that the evidence has turned against it, and present this edition as though the framework never leaned on it. It did. The layer is also the single most commercially promoted idea in this space, which means a clean, blinded null has public value that a silent retraction does not. Keeping a hypothesis you expect to lose is what it costs to have said “falsifiable” and meant it.
4. Proposed Protocol (Conceptual)
The following describes the intended shape of a session, not a validated procedure.
4.1 Selection
The person brings 5–10 pieces genuinely meaningful to them. Artist, genre, and era are irrelevant; personal significance is the only criterion.
Lossless, legitimately obtained audio is preferred. Blind-listening evidence suggests most listeners cannot reliably distinguish high-bitrate lossy from lossless, so fidelity is not claimed as a mechanism. It is retained because it expresses the intent layer — care in the materials — and costs nothing to adopt.
4.2 Depth interview
Before any audio work, a structured conversation identifies which pieces are tied to deep, formative, autobiographically rich memory versus those valued at the surface.26 The interview is also where unsuitable material (e.g., songs bound to acute grief) can be noticed and handled with care. New in this edition: the interview should also probe for Phase 2 history — whether a piece has ever produced chills, absorption, or the momentary drop-out of self — since H8 predicts that pieces producing only Phase 1 will underperform.
4.3 Audio application, resonance, and what was retired
An auditory layer, where used, is explored in collaboration with the individual, with parameters tuned to that person rather than fixed in advance. Three changes follow from §2.5–2.6:
The entrainment layer is retired from its driving role. It is no longer presented as the mechanism by which anything works. It survives only as H3 — a hypothesis to be cleanly falsified. Where used, binaural and monaural beats and tuning offsets are candidate techniques compared empirically, never settled methods.
Tuning is tested per person, not prescribed. Where a retuned version is used, 432 Hz is one arm of a within-person comparison against 440 Hz and a neutral offset — with the pitch difference concealed and the mythology unmentioned, since naming it contaminates the measurement.
Resonance is met in the body, not guessed at in the tone. Sessions pair meaningful music with slow, individually located resonance-frequency breathing near six breaths per minute, so that “natural resonance achieved” has a referent in the baroreflex rather than in numerology.
Speculative — flagged honestly. A person-specific audible “memory frequency,” and a forward-then-reversed frequency structure meant to help a state consolidate, still lack any mechanism in the auditory-neuroscience literature I can point to. They are hunches, not methods. The reversed-structure idea is best re-examined against consolidation research (H7/H8), where “helping a state settle” at least has a real referent.
4.4 Repetition / cueing
The intended real-world use is a deliberate daily anchor — a chosen activation piece used each morning — on the conditioning logic that a piece repeatedly paired with an intentional positive state becomes a more reliable cue for it. Repetition, not a single dramatic session, is hypothesized to do the durable work, and is the route by which H7’s outlasting would accrue.
5. Measurement: What “The Feeling Stuck” Would Actually Look Like
A claim about persistence is only meaningful if persistence is observable. This edition can be far more specific than the last two, because the transcendence literature has instruments the framework can simply adopt.
Affect and persistence - Validated self-report mood scales (PANAS-type) at baseline, immediately after, and at later intervals. - Time-to-return-to-baseline as the key persistence variable. - Next-day and multi-day follow-up to test H7’s memory route: survival across sleep and strengthening over a fortnight of daily cueing is the consolidation signature; disappearance within minutes means it was a mood tail.
Transcendence and absorption — validated instruments - Ego-Dissolution Inventory (EDI) — eight items, validated across a large sample with excellent internal consistency and convergent validity against mystical-experience measures.27 - Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ-30) for the unitive/noetic dimension. - Awe Experience Scale (AWE-S), with the short form where session length is constrained.28 - Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS) — collected once per person as the primary trait moderator for H6.29
Network measures (H8/H9) - Time-resolved imaging where resources allow, with the chills peak as the anchoring event: default-mode engagement early, disengagement at peak, and the magnitude of the crossing as the predictor of persistence. - Interhemispheric functional connectivity, meaningful vs. matched non-meaningful music, longitudinally where possible — the H9 design.
Supporting - Optional physiological correlates (heart rate, skin conductance, HRV), treated as supporting rather than primary; HRV doubles as a coherence measure and a readout of resonance breathing. - A simple daily log when the cueing use is tested.
Comparison conditions matter as much as measures: own-meaningful vs. own-pleasant-but-shallow (H1/H5); with-layer vs. without-layer, blinded (H3); individually tuned vs. fixed (H4); 432 vs. 440 vs. neutral offset with pitch concealed (H6); and both-phase vs. Phase-1-only pieces (H8).
6. Ethics, Consent, and Scope of Claims
Non-negotiable scope statement. This approach is positioned as a possible complement to established care, never a substitute. Nothing in this framework advises anyone to begin, change, or discontinue any medication, including antidepressants. Stopping such medication can carry real risk and is a decision for a person and their prescribing clinician alone.
The framework is written pre-credential and pre-data. As the work matures toward accredited practice, the appropriate instrument is not a liability waiver but informed consent through an ethics board / IRB. The accompanying participation agreement is an honest, claims-free consent document for the current informal exploration; it is not a substitute for IRB approval once real research begins.
6.1 Risk, with the numbers
Earlier editions gestured at risk. This one states it, because the moment a framework starts targeting absorption and self-transcendence it has entered territory with a documented adverse-event profile, and the honest thing is to publish the figures rather than the gesture.
A systematic review covering 83 studies and 6,703 participants found a total adverse-event prevalence of 8.3% in meditation practices and meditation-based therapies — comparable to the rate reported for psychotherapy generally — with anxiety, depression, and cognitive anomalies the most common categories.30 Qualitative and population work documents depersonalization and derealization, anxiety, trauma re-experiencing, and, rarely, psychosis, with lasting negative effects in the region of one practitioner in ten.31
Three consequences for design, stated as requirements rather than cautions:
Screen for depersonalization/derealization vulnerability and psychosis risk before any intensive or immersive protocol. A framework whose Phase 2 is a controlled loosening of self-boundaries cannot treat boundary-loss as an unexpected side effect.
Keep a referral path live. Emotionally significant music surfaces difficult material by design; that is the mechanism, not a malfunction.
Do not let immersion do the work and call it evidence. Retreat context, ritual, and expectation reliably produce profound experiences on their own — and trait absorption predicts who they work on, which is the same variable H6 rides. An immersive protocol therefore risks manufacturing exactly the outcome it claims to measure.
6.2 Contamination cautions
Two, named so they are already in the design when stakes rise. First, reports gathered from people personally close to the researcher are especially vulnerable to demand characteristics — a reason to weight later, independently collected data far above early informal impressions. Second, the 432 Hz mythology and the Gateway mythology are both unusually strong expectation-engines; any protocol that names either to participants has already contaminated its own measurement. The Monroe Institute’s own efficacy research is largely in-house, small, and not independently replicated, and should be read accordingly.
7. Limitations and Open Questions
Stated plainly, because naming one’s own weak points is what earns trust in everything else.
The framework has now failed twice in the physics register. 432 Hz and hemispheric synchronization both collapsed on examination. That is a pattern, and a reader is entitled to ask whether the next physical mechanism will fail too. My honest answer is: probably, and that is why this edition moved the load off physics entirely.
H8 is the most interesting claim here and the least established. Its weakest assumption — that music-induced transcendence shares network dynamics with meditative and psychedelic ego-dissolution — is named in §2.8 and may be false.
H9 may resolve against the framework. If interhemispheric connectivity turns out to be a correlate rather than a cause of felt integration, the bridge closes and the companion essay’s open door closes with it. I would rather know.
The 432 reopening remains a reopening of a question, not an endorsement. The direct evidence is small and expectation-confounded.
“Alignment” is a proxy, not a measurement of the soul. Absorption, interoception, and HRV coherence stand in for it; they may not capture what I mean, and the H6 interaction may simply not exist.
Blinding pitch is genuinely hard, and remains the central methodological threat to any tuning arm.
Persistence beyond minutes is unestablished. The hours-long carry runs through memory or it does not run at all.
Lossless fidelity likely does nothing measurable to affect; it stays for reasons of care, not mechanism.
Placebo, ritual, and expectation are powerful here and must be controlled for — especially because the intervention is built from material the person already loves, and doubly because absorption predicts both the outcome and the susceptibility.
The intent layer may be real and still empirically hard to isolate; its primary role is interpretive.
The samples underneath several load-bearing citations are small — thirty musicians, thirty meditators, single imaging studies. This framework is built on a literature that is itself thinner than it looks.
8. Next Steps
Circulate as a conceptual proposal, not a result.
With a credentialed collaborator, convert H1–H9 into a pre-registered, ethics-approved design with defined populations, measures, and comparison conditions.
Begin with the cleanest, least-confounded test — H1/H5, meaningful vs. shallow music — before touching the contested layers.
Run H3 as a genuine blinded null test rather than dropping it, and publish the result either way.
Treat H8 as the framework’s primary scientific contribution and design the time-resolved study that could kill it.
Pursue H9 with a collaborator who has imaging access — longitudinal or not at all, since the cross-sectional version has already been run and cannot answer the question.
Treat early findings as hypothesis-generating; reserve strong claims for replicated, independently collected data.

1. On neural entrainment to auditory rhythm — the phase-locking of neural oscillations to a beat — see reviews of auditory entrainment (Neuroscience Research, 2020), with the standard caution that spectral power at a stimulation frequency does not by itself prove an endogenous oscillation.

4. Calamassi & Pomponi, Explore 15(4):283–290 (2019), double-blind crossover, n=33, reporting a heart-rate decrease under 432 Hz (−4.79 bpm, p=0.05) — borderline significance, small sample. Aravena et al., Journal of Applied Oral Science 28:e20190601 (2020), n=42 dental extraction RCT: anxiety reduction was essentially identical between 432 Hz and 440 Hz (both far better than silence); only salivary cortisol distinguished them. A 2025 randomized crossover in cancer patients (n=43, 432 vs 443 Hz, BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies) found most 432 Hz effects were not significantly different from the comparison tuning, with roughly two-thirds of participants noticing a difference and over half preferring 432 Hz — an expectation signal; its authors state the theoretical basis for natural physiological effects of 432 Hz rests on historical and philosophical interpretation, not empirical data. Contrary result: Jebabli et al., PeerJ 13:e19084 (2025), n=28, where 440 Hz outperformed 432 Hz on performance and affect.
