On Rising

A philosophical perspective on becoming coherent as a whole — on rising not as ascent above others but as the coming-into-order of a life. Rising, here, is the movement from scattered to aligned, the lift that happens when the parts of a person, or a community, begin to resonate together. The piece is among the more hopeful of the On——ing essays, concerned with the felt experience of things coming right. It connects to On Finding and On Facing as part of the series' account of coherence arriving, and treats elevation as a matter of integration rather than height.
